Cassling's Wellness Program Benefits
In February 2009, Cassling employees underwent the company’s annual wellness screening. The results of that screening showed that Cassling’s wellness program had helped employees make significant improvements to their health in the past three years. Since 2006:
- Tobacco use has dropped from 11.3 percent to 4.3 percent
- High risk blood pressure has dropped from 15.9 percent to 7.5 percent
- Participation in a regular exercise program has increased from 67 percent to 75 percent
Cassling realizes the advantages of having an on-site program and has implemented the following benefits to help keep wellness top of mind:
Captain Cassling’s Cart
In an effort to encourage employees to eat healthy snacks, Cassling implemented Captain Cassling’s Cart in February 2005. The cart offers a variety of healthy snack options and is free for employees. Snacks include fruit, vegetables, low-sodium crackers, juice, low-fat pudding and more. Vending machine sales dropped 54 percent after the healthier alternative of Captain Cassling’s Cart was implemented.
Annual Wellness Stipend
Cassling offers wellness participants an annual wellness stipend. The money is used to finance wellness-related activities and encourages employees to participate in long-term activities ranging from gym memberships to cooking classes. The incentive gives employees a sense of ownership by reimbursing 50 percent of the activity/equipment cost.
Annual Health Screens/Health-risk Assessment
For the second year, Cassling conducted an annual health screening and health-risk assessment for employees and spouses at no charge. Based on the results, Cassling’s wellness committee developed a comprehensive plan to address the company’s greatest risks.
Community Events/Volunteer Opportunities
Cassling realizes the importance of exercise and participates in a variety of community events to encourage physical activity.
Quarterly Incentives
Cassling’s wellness committee coordinates incentive programs throughout the year to help encourage employees to stay healthy. Programs range from walking to reading, and prizes are given throughout the course of the program to help keep participants motivated.
