Cassling's Wellness Program Benefits
Cassling realizes the advantages of having an on-site program and has implemented the following benefits to help keep wellness top of mind:
Captain Cassling’s Cart
In an effort to encourage employees to eat healthy snacks, Cassling implemented Captain Cassling’s Cart in February 2005. The cart offers a variety of healthy snack options and is free for employees. Snacks include fruit, vegetables, low-sodium crackers, juice, low-fat pudding and more. Vending machine sales dropped 54 percent after the healthier alternative of Captain Cassling’s Cart was implemented.
Annual Wellness Stipend
Cassling offers wellness participants an annual wellness stipend. The money is used to finance wellness-related activities and encourages employees to participate in long-term activities ranging from gym memberships to cooking classes. The incentive gives employees a sense of ownership by reimbursing 50 percent of the activity/equipment cost. More than 90 percent of employees used some or all of their wellness allowance in 2006.
Annual Health Screens/Health-risk Assessment
For the second year, Cassling conducted an annual health screening and health-risk assessment for employees and spouses at no charge. Based on the results, Cassling’s wellness committee developed a comprehensive plan to address the company’s greatest risks.
Community Events/Volunteer Opportunities
Cassling realizes the importance of exercise and participates in a variety of community events to encourage physical activity. The company recently placed third in the YMCA’s ‘Workforce on the Move’ program that challenged companies to walk one million steps in seven days. Cassling employees exceeded that goal; walking close to two million steps in one week. Each participant was given a pedometer and walking tips were posted on the employee Intranet throughout the week. The average number of steps per person for the week was close to 52,000 steps.
Quarterly Incentives
Cassling’s wellness committee coordinates incentive programs throughout the year to help encourage employees to stay healthy. Programs range from walking to reading, and prizes are given throughout the course of the program to help keep participants motivated. Below is a list of the incentives Cassling has offered:
Walking Your Way to Wellness
Incentive challenged employees to walk 10,000 steps per day (about five miles) by the end of the four-week program. A pedometer was given to each participant. More than 50 employees participated and approximately 13 million steps were taken throughout the course of the program.
Biggest Loser
Captain Cassling introduced the ‘Biggest Loser’ weight loss incentive to all employees and spouses in July 2006. Nearly 40 people signed up for the program. Prizes were given to the top male and female and winners were based on the highest percentage of pounds lost. Motivational tips were communicated to employees throughout the four months. The top female lost 17.6 percent of her weight and the top male lost 8.1 percent. Both received a $150 gift certificate to Travel and Transport.
Lunch-n-Learn sessions
Cassling’s wellness committee coordinates lunch-n-learn sessions throughout the year on health-related topics ranging from volunteer opportunities to nutrition. The sessions typically are one hour and provide a wealth of information to help keep wellness top of mind. A healthy lunch is provided to all wellness members.
Captain Cassling’s Corner
Our employee Intranet is the primary communication vehicle used to communicate wellness information. Captain Cassling’s Corner, which is a link on the Intranet, offers wellness tips, articles and upcoming events relating to the mind, body and soul.
Bi-monthly e-newsletter
Wellness members receive a bi-monthly e-newsletter full of wellness-related articles, tips and Web sites. In addition, the newsletter provides healthy recipes and community events. The publication allows quick access to wellness information and helps encourage employees to make healthier decisions.
