Overview:
Osteoporosis is a significant public health concern that affects millions of individuals, particularly women over the age of 50. At the same time, advances in breast cancer treatment have significantly improved survival rates, allowing more women to live longer after diagnosis. However, several common breast cancer treatments can accelerate bone loss and increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
This presentation explores the relationship between breast cancer and osteoporosis by reviewing bone biology, risk factors for bone loss and the effects of cancer therapies on bone health. The session will also discuss the role of bone densitometry in screening and monitoring patients, as well as strategies for prevention and management of osteoporosis in this population.
Learning Objectives
Describe the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and factors that influence bone health
Identify major risk factors associated with the development of osteoporosis
Explain how breast cancer and its treatments can contribute to decreased bone density
Discuss the role of bone densitometry in the diagnosis and monitoring of osteoporosis
Recognize strategies for prevention and management of osteoporosis in patients undergoing breast cancer treatment

Catherine Cooper, Ph.D., R.T.(R)(CT)(BD)(ARRT) is Chair of the Department of Radiologic Sciences at the University of South Alabama, where she oversees undergraduate and graduate programs in radiography and advanced imaging. She has extensive experience in radiologic education, curriculum development and clinical training, and she has been actively involved in preparing students for careers across multiple imaging specialties.
With clinical certifications in radiography, computed tomography and bone densitometry, Dr. Cooper brings both academic and clinical perspectives to her teaching and professional presentations. Her scholarly interests include imaging education, instructional design and the integration of innovative teaching strategies in radiologic sciences.
Dr. Cooper is actively engaged in professional service and leadership within the radiologic sciences community and is committed to advancing education and patient care through evidence-based practice and interdisciplinary collaboration.
