Overview:
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) remain a leading occupational health concern in sonography, often resulting in chronic pain, decreased productivity, and even early retirement. This session focuses on evidence-based strategies to reduce the risk of injury during daily scanning. Attendees will explore common ergonomic hazards in sonography, such as repetitive motions, poor posture, awkward patient positioning, and heavy equipment handling, and learn adjustments that can be implemented into practice. The course reviews proper body mechanics, equipment optimization, workflow planning, and self-care techniques to promote long-term health and career sustainability for sonographers.
Learning Objectives
Identify the most common ergonomic risk factors and mechanisms leading to WRMSDs in sonographic practice.
Demonstrate proper scanning ergonomics, body positioning, and transducer handling techniques to reduce strain.
Apply strategies for optimizing equipment setup, patient positioning, and workflow sequencing to minimize injury risk.
Develop a proactive plan for ongoing musculoskeletal health, including stretching, micro-breaks, and ergonomic best practices to sustain a long and healthy career in sonography.
