Language Barriers and the Importance of Medical Interpreters

Written by Cassling | Oct 14, 2024

This presentation will discuss the diverse Limited English Proficient (LEP) population and statistics on the languages spoken throughout the country. Participants will learn what defines an LEP person/patient and what protections and resources are in place for them to receive high-quality healthcare in their primary language.

We’ll review the qualifications of a trained medical interpreter and weigh the pros and cons of using one. The presentation will also discuss communication tips and tricks with some radiology department-specific examples.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify three characteristics of a trained medical interpreter
  • List three reasons why using a friend or family member for interpretation may contribute to poor patient outcomes
  • Identify laws that ensure patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) receive healthcare, including access to interpretive services, regardless of their race, color or national origin
