Overview:
This presentation will discuss the diverse Limited English Proficient (LEP) population and statistics on the languages spoken throughout the country. Participants will learn what defines an LEP person/patient and what protections and resources are in place for them to receive high-quality healthcare in their primary language.
We’ll review the qualifications of a trained medical interpreter and weigh the pros and cons of using one. The presentation will also discuss communication tips and tricks with some radiology department-specific examples.
Learning Objectives
Identify three characteristics of a trained medical interpreter
List three reasons why using a friend or family member for interpretation may contribute to poor patient outcomes
Identify laws that ensure patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) receive healthcare, including access to interpretive services, regardless of their race, color or national origin

Olivia Enriquez is an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College (UCBA) in the Radiologic Technology program. She graduated from the Ohio State University with her Bachelor's degree in Allied Health Professions - Radiography in 2013 and completed her Quality Management credential shortly thereafter. She worked as a Radiographer and adjunct instructor at OSU and Ohio Health healthcare systems for several years before pursuing her Master's in Public Health (MPH) degree from Ohio State.
After graduating in 2020, Olivia relocated to her hometown and was the Lead Technologist at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) before beginning a full-time position at UC Blue Ash last year. She continues to work PRN at UCMC.
In what little spare time she has, Olivia enjoys traveling, enjoying a cold beverage on a warm patio, and the occasional Netflix marathon!
