Breast Density Regulations and Why They Matter

With the ever-increasing amount of information required to be shared with patients, are we, as healthcare providers, equipped with the best tools to keep up? This session will enable participants to confidently educate their patients on breast density findings and the necessary follow-up care. We will review the different density software versions and how they assist the radiologist in objective reporting of breast density BI-RADS. Lastly, we will review the current legislation governing the lay letter reporting of density to patients.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate the varying levels of dense breast tissue
  2. Discuss breast density and its association with increased cancer risk
  3. Understand the masking effect in relation to breast density
  4. Interpret BI-RADS associated with breast density
  5. Provide patients with educational resources
  6. Understand legislation and how it affects patient notification

Throughout her healthcare career, Karen DeVoid has been focused on women’s health issues. Early on in her career as a mammography technologist at NY Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, she discovered her passion for education. Karen has been invited to speak at numerous women’s groups to train women on early detection and self-breast examination. She has given many presentations on the importance of mammography, male breast cancer and imaging difficult patients. During her tenure with Siemens Healthineers, Karen has been responsible for training customers and global application specialists on the proper use of breast imaging products. She was in product management for years but has recently returned to where her true passion lies: education.
