Overview:

The purpose of this presentation is to review the normal and abnormal sonographic appearance of the gastrointestinal tract.

This lecture will go over sonographic imaging protocol, provide tips for assessing various gastrointestinal structures and raise awareness of common gastrointestinal pathologies, including small and large bowel intussusception, pyloric stenosis and the varying sonographic appearance of appendicitis. We’ll also discuss how a sonographer’s understanding of ultrasound findings and prompt communication to the radiologist can speed up diagnosis and improve overall patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Review anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract.

2.

Discuss sonographic imaging protocol for small and large bowel, appendix and pylorus evaluation.

3.

Recognize common gastrointestinal pathologies and the significance of each.

Jenna N. Laquerre is a professor of radiography and sonography at Palm Beach State College and a current graduate student at the University of North Florida. She is an alumna of Palm Beach State College in radiography and sonography and a Bachelor of Health Sciences graduate from Seminole State College.

Jenna is a member of the Lambda Nu National Honor Society for Radiologic and Imaging Sciences, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. She is a manuscript peer reviewer for the journal Radiologic Technology, a published author and educational speaker, and she has clinical experience from national institutions, including Nemours Children’s Hospital and AdventHealth. Jenna recently authored Lange Review: The Fundamentals of Pediatric Sonography: A Registry Review and Protocol Guide
