Spectral Doppler waveforms provide arterial and venous flow signatures of the tissue they support, providing key information on both normal and healthy tissue states that goes way beyond indicating “flow” or “no flow.”

This talk applies foundational information in arterial and venous physiology to build a basic hemodynamic framework that can be used to understand and interpret any arterial or venous spectral Doppler waveform. All explanations will utilize language outlined in the 2020 consensus statement from the Society for Vascular Medicine and Society for Vascular Ultrasound.

Learning Objectives:

  • Utilize Society for Vascular Medicine and Society for Vascular Ultrasound consensus language to describe the normal components of arterial and venous waveforms
  • Predict normal waveform appearance based on the characteristics of what tissue it supports
  • Describe what abnormal spectral Doppler waveforms indicate about underlying pathology
