Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field that shows continued promise in aiding diagnosis from images, specifically diagnostic medical images. These benefits extend beyond the imaging department, as radiation oncology departments begin to automate labor-intensive treatment planning processes. While many technologists may not be aware of image analysis outside of their home imaging departments, disciplines including dermatology, pathology and many others that examine images stand to benefit from AI advances.
Given the explosion in interest and research inquiries concerning AI, it is important for technologists to become familiar with the terminology surrounding AI, as well as the potential impact on patient care and economic factors.
